E3 2012: What a random game critic is interested in seeing

With the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo on the very near horizon, I figured I'd jot down a couple of games that I guess you can say that I'm "anticipating." These game are merely the ones that I'm most curious about and do not at all mean they will be absolutely fantastic products when they are finally released, though ideally they will be. Also, this list is in no particular order and I will write down each game as they come to my ever-deteriorating mind. Wait, I mean my highly astute mind. Yeah, astute.

Uh, anyways. Without further adieu, here they are:

Halo 4

With the transition from Bungie Studios to 343 Industries, many are wondering just how much the Halo franchise will change in the hands of a new developer, including myself. And after all the recent information that has been coming out of the woodwork, from Game Informer's fairly recent cover story to the MLG event held in New York demonstrating the multiplayer, I am very curious to see just how everything will pan out. You can bet your sweet little behind that at the very least, some brand new single-player footage will be revealed.

Assassin's Creed 3

While the abundance of Assassin's Creed releases were starting to wane on me greatly (I didn't even finish Brotherhood or even touch Revelations. I know, I'm a terrible person...maybe?), this third entry in the series is sounding more and more intriguing as more and more information is revealed. Honestly, I would have called you a crazy person and politely suggest you have your brain checked out at your local institution at your most early convenience if you told me that I would be excited about yet another Assassin's Creed title coming. But alas, Ubisoft has me intrigued with this American Revolution backdrop and their variety of new gameplay features.

Resident Evil 6

This is a game in which I just simply want to know what direction Capcom is taking this long-lasting series. I mean, it seems like they are trying to split the game between horror elements and exciting Hollywood-style action to appease all audiences, but just how effective will it be? Will long-time fans look in disgust at the focus on action, especially considering the reaction of the not-even-scary-unless-your-mom-still-buys-you-your-games RE5? I am very, very curious about how this title will turn out. Oh yeah, and how exactly will the multiplayer work? Ugh, so many questions...

God of War: Ascension

Wait, another single-player focused game to receive an ever-popular multiplayer component? First reaction: Oh God almighty why, whyyy? After actually seeing it in action: Hmmmm wow, this actually looks pretty cool. While I'm still not entirely convinced that we need yet another prequel in the God of War series, I must admit that if done correctly, this title could shine a new light on what has to be the most joy-filled character in all of gaming: Kratos. I really hope they delve deeper into his more human side in this one, as his belligerent yelling and raging was starting to get a tad bit ridiculous. I mean, just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean you have to murder them Kratos...

The Last of Us

Not very much is known about Naughty Dog's brand new IP, other than being a survival-based, third-person shooter that involves some rather nasty looking monsters. But given the cinematic pedigree that the Uncharted series has solidified, I am quite interested in learning more about this mysterious title. Here's hoping that The Last of Us isn't merely a re-skin of that popular PS3 series. I'm not too worried though, as the scants amount of information that have been released seem to imply that this game will be less pulp-action and more grounded in reality, with ammunition and resources being scarce in this dark, dreary world.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Despite the very, very odd title, I'm quite fascinated with how this product will actually turn out. After being on the brink of cancellation, Platinum Games swooped in and saved this title as it was struggling on life-support. The newest trailer demonstrating the overhauled gameplay and outlandish cinematic scope has many people worried as to whether or not Rising is going to be too bat-crazy-insane, even by Metal Gear standards. I'm merely taking the wait-and-see approach, as Platinum Games do have a weird place in my heart, especially after playing and thoroughly enjoying Vanquish.

The Last Guardian (probably won't be there but I'm adding it anyways)

Wow, what a mysterious little game. Skipping trade show after trade show, many are wondering whether or not this game actually exists still. While Sony is assuring that The Last Guardian is still in development, the fact that creator-head Fumito Ueda has left Sony brings doubt, even if he is still supposedly helping finish the title. You know, because of contracts and important suit and tie stuff like that. I really hope that we see another glimpse of this game, as it has been way too long (years even) and many people are looking forward to it a great deal. And anyways, look at that feather tech. You just can't waste all that feather tech.

Final Fantasy Versus 13 (another that will probably most likely be absent but I can dream)

It's pretty crazy to think that we are doubting the appearance of a game that was announced, what like, six years ago? But even if Square-Enix's list of games for E3 doesn't include Versus 13, I'm still holding out on a small, minuscule sliver of hope that it will be there. It just has to right? Oh wait, there's the Tokyo Game Show as well. But isn't that what we said last year? And the year before? Also, is the game even going to be called Versus 13 anymore? I mean, FF13 came out in 2010, and with the sequel's sales being relatively low by Final Fantasy standards, will they want to associate this game with one of their least successful entries in the franchise? And with the constant talks and speculation about the impending release of next-gen hardware, Tetsuya Nomura and his team have to be feeling the pressure about releasing it relatively soon. So. Many. Questions. Throw us a bone Square-Enix.

Unannounced Games

And the best part about E3: the unknown quantities. What surprises are in store for us? What hidden gems are waiting to flourish? It's the new announcements that keep the show both mysterious and exciting. And I simply cannot wait to see what Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have hidden up their sleeves. I'm guessing chain mail. Very strong and resilient chain mail.
